TURNING TO SIDE-LYING POSITION IN BED

AIMS
Elderly

  • understands the meaning of own activity in changing position in bed
  • is motivated to move with as little help as possible in changing positions in bed
  • is able to turn to side-lying position with help
  • learns to use the natural movement models in turning
  • gets a pleasant position

METHOD / ACTIVITY
Instructions to the carer

  • help the elderly to move to the other side of the bed to enable the turning to the side-lying position
  • guide the elderly to flex the knees
  • guide the elderly to move the hips and help with open palms under the hips if necessary  help to move the shoulders
  • check that there is enough space to turn
  • guide and help the natural movements
    • cross the ankles (the above leg over the one underneath)
    • flex the underneath elbow to 90 degrees
    • turn the head to the side
    • reach with the upper arm to the side, rotate your thoracic spine
    • let the pelvis turn
  • flex the upper leg to 90 degrees
  • help the elderly in the movements manually if needed
  • move the pelvis backwards a little and check that the underneath shoulder is in relaxed position
  • put a pillow under the upper leg and support with a pillow(s) behind the back
